Everybody Cries About Writing

Writing is so difficult!

Writing is so difficult!

I have a love/hate relationship with writing. I love to write for myself. I make lists, keep notes of my day, and write little journal entries all the time. But, I really struggle with academic writing (you might say, I hate it).

I just recently finished my Masters program in May, and the theme of my experience writing papers was definitely: when in doubt, cry about it. For some papers, I felt like I had nothing to say. For others, I felt like everything I said made no sense. I liked to imagine all of the terrible things that could happen (professors and peers laughing at my writing, getting kicked out of the program for not making a point, not having anything to say in class, etc.), and cry even harder about those too. I got myself so worked up.

Thinking that everyone gets frustrated with [academic] writing is one of the few times where that empathy conversation works. You know the one: you complain to a friend about some trouble you are having and they come back at you with “You think that’s bad?!” Usually, I really hate this type of reaction. But, with writing, it actually does make me feel better. Yes, please, tell me how you got stuck, erased the whole document, couldn’t get past the first paragraph, or couldn’t get past the first sentence! I want to know all your woes!

Because, as R.E.M. says:

Well, everybody hurts sometimes

Everybody cries [about writing]

Everybody hurts sometimes.

Danielle, I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve cried during the last month over my writing projects (and, like, a dozen other things, but mostly my writing projects). Thank you for letting me know I’m not the only one.
