Getting Back in the Swing of Things

Since the summer, I’ve gone from having no job to having four jobs and I can tell you with certainty: my life is hectic. It’s often difficult to manage commuting, weird and inconsistent schedules, and actual work, all while making time to eat, sleep, and go to the gym. Maybe you’ve heard a lot about scarcity lately; well, I am definitely feeling it!

I’m so focused on everything in front of me; I’ve managed to push a lot aside, including reading and writing. Now, I only read when I’m at the gym (stationary bike for the win!), but I feel like something is missing.

…It’s writing! And truthfully, I really want to get back into it. The trick is getting focused and staying committed.

It’s not enough to just set a goal, or to say I will write an article before the New Year. Those are things that are completely at my whim (it becomes something that I can continue to put on the backburner and inevitably forget about). I don’t know how to make a solid commitment about something no one else has control over, but maybe telling you on here is one way to gain some writing accountability.

When you have a lot going on, piling on more commitments can seem impossible. But if it’s something that you are passionate about, or that keeps nagging at you to get it done, you should probably just commit to doing it!

So here it is blog-audience: I want to write a literary article and have it ready to submit for publication by January 30. Now you know; hold me to it.

I totally feel you on this! I’m also working 4 jobs and sometimes I’ll be driving home and all of a sudden, it’ll hit me that I haven’t written in a long time. I have the same problem with setting a goal…if I try to set it for myself, half the time I never accomplish it. I’ll try what you’re doing and tell mine to everyone so they hold me accountable :). Best of luck!
